Sustainable packaging has emerged as a key innovation in addressing global environmental challenges associated with conventional plastics. Among various alternatives, edible bioplastics have demonstrated unique potential by offering both biodegradability and the capacity for direct consumption. This research explored recent developments in the field of edible bioplastics, examining their materials, production techniques, performance characteristics, and applications in food packaging. Derived from renewable sources such as starch, gelatin, casein, seaweed, and polysaccharides, edible bioplastics represent an ecological advancement toward waste-free packaging systems. The study also analyzed their physicochemical properties, cost-effectiveness, safety, and consumer acceptance compared with synthetic plastics. Despite certain limitations related to moisture sensitivity and mechanical strength, edible bioplastics offered a promising balance between functionality and sustainability. This paper concluded that innovations in formulation and nanocomposite technology could enhance edible bioplastics’ performance, enabling a significant transition toward circular economy models and environmentally conscious packaging solutions.
