TRANSFORMING POST-CONSUMER COTTON WASTE TEXTILES INTO VISCOSE STAPLE FIBER USING HYDRATED ZINC CHLORIDE

Post-consumer cotton waste constitutes a largely untapped reservoir of cellulosic material. Transforming this waste into regenerated cellulose fibers represents a promising fiber-to-fiber recycling route. One emerging approach employs hydrated zinc chloride (ZnCl₂·xH₂O) as a solvent and swelling medium for the dissolution of cotton waste, followed by regeneration into viscose staple fiber. This review synthesizes the current state of research on this transformation pathway: the dissolution chemistry, processing conditions, recovery of ZnCl₂, viscose spinning from regenerated pulp, fiber properties, challenges, and sustainability considerations. Key achievements, limitations, and future directions are discussed. The review aims to situate the hydrated ZnCl₂ approach relative to other cellulose recycling technologies and to highlight critical knowledge gaps for scaling toward industrial viability.
