Аннотация

Temporal reference is a fundamental component of human language, enabling speakers to situate events in time. The Japanese language employs a distinct system for expressing temporal relations, characterized by a binary tense system and extensive reliance on contextual and lexical cues. This study examines how actions in time—specifically past, present, and future events—are encoded in Japanese through verb morphology, temporal adverbials, and particles. Special attention is given to the interaction between grammatical tense and pragmatic context. The findings reveal that Japanese relies less on morphological tense distinctions and more on temporal expressions and discourse context, offering an efficient yet nuanced system for representing time.
