Аннотация

The exponential growth of automated bot activity on the internet has made it increasingly difficult to distinguish legitimate human users from malicious software agents. Credential stuffing, spam injection, web scraping, and distributed denial-of-service attacks cost the global economy billions of dollars annually and undermine trust in digital services. This paper provides a comprehensive examination of CAPTCHA (Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart), a family of challenge–response security mechanisms designed to verify that an interaction originates from a human rather than a machine. Unlike simple authentication barriers such as passwords or rate limiters, CAPTCHAs exploit the asymmetry between human cognitive abilities and machine perception by presenting tasks that are trivial for humans yet computationally difficult for automated solvers. The article examines the theoretical foundations of human–machine distinguishability, adversarial challenge design, and reverse Turing test theory. We present a four-layer CAPTCHA system architecture comprising challenge generation, delivery and rendering, response validation, and adaptive difficulty layers. Furthermore, we discuss practical benefits (e.g., bot mitigation, abuse prevention, data labeling as a by-product) and persistent challenges (accessibility for users with disabilities, evolving AI-based solvers, user friction). Future research directions include invisible behavioral biometric CAPTCHAs and proof-of-personhood cryptographic protocols.
